Jena has made its mark in the world of science thanks to the many inventions, patents and innovations conceived here.
It’s not just binoculars that were invented in Jena – the city started the German tradition of giving children a cone filled with sweets on their first day at school. Other firsts include the projector in the Zeiss Planetarium and the German school hiking day. Thanks to the Jena rules of 1893, football in Germany is played on fields without trees or shrubs, and the black, red and gold of the German national flag originates in Jena.
