“For us who still hold hope”

A look at Jena’s recent history

‘Für uns, die wir noch hoffen’, or ‘For us who still hold hope’, is the title of a song from 1976 by East German musicians Gerulf Pannach & Christian Kunert. It’s the perfect title for this tour of Jena’s recent history.

The tour examines opposition and resistance in Jena from 1945 to 1989 and the role this played in the peaceful revolution. The hopes held over this period became a reality in 1989, when the voice of the people led to the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November of that year. The cheers from that day still ring in our ears today. Taking in the historic sites associated with this period, the tour provides an insight into the events that led to that day, the difficulties that were encountered along the way and the contribution that Jena’s inhabitants made. The tour lasts around 90 minutes and takes you through the centre of Jena.
